What this means
The platform is a tool. The decision is whether the business can finish and maintain the public job the site needs to do.
What to do first
1. List the essential pages. 2. Build the call, booking, order, or inquiry path. 3. Test it on a phone. 4. Set a realistic time limit.
When to leave it alone
Do not hire help because a template is unfashionable. Do not keep DIYing forever because the template looked easy on day one.
When doing it yourself on Squarespace is the right call
Squarespace is a fair answer for plenty of small businesses. Doing it yourself makes sense when most of these are true:
- The site is a handful of pages: what you do, prices or menu, hours and location, and contact.
- Booking, ordering, or payments already run through a tool you like, and the site only needs to send people there.
- You have the words and photos, or can pull them together in a weekend.
- Someone at the business will update hours and prices when they change.
Some upkeep comes built in. Squarespace says every domain correctly pointed at a Squarespace site gets a free SSL certificate automatically. SSL is the security layer Squarespace says helps stop hackers from stealing visitors’ information, like what a customer types into your contact form.
When hiring help is the better use of money
- You started the site months ago and it is still not live.
- The site has to hand information to another system, like an intake form that should land in your booking calendar or client records.
- You have more than one location, service area, or language, and each needs a clear page of its own.
- An hour of your time is worth more than an hour of help. Do that math honestly.
Hiring help does not have to mean leaving Squarespace. See the middle path below.
Check what comes with you if you leave later
Leaving Squarespace is possible, but not everything comes along. Squarespace’s export makes one .xml file in WordPress format, a data file built for importing into WordPress. It includes layout pages, one blog, text blocks, and image blocks. The photos themselves may not come along: Squarespace warns that some WordPress imports only link back to images stored on Squarespace, and those links stop working after you cancel. Check that every image shows up on the new site before you cancel anything.
It leaves out store pages, product blocks, video blocks, drafts, style settings, and custom CSS, the extra style code some sites use. Store products export on their own to a .csv spreadsheet file, which Squarespace says skips featured images, variant images, image alt text, and customer reviews.
So keep your own copies of final page text, photos, and logo files from day one. If booking runs inside the site, read how to move off Squarespace without breaking booking before you plan any switch.
The middle path: a designer builds, the business owns
Set it up so the business keeps the keys:
- Create the Squarespace account yourself, with a business email address and a business card on file. Do the same for the domain; here is how to own your domain name.
- Invite the designer as a contributor with Administrator permission while they build. Squarespace says administrators can do almost everything the owner can, except transfer ownership. Its permissions chart shows that includes deleting the site and canceling the subscription, so give it only for the build.
- If the designer already built the site in their own account, ask for a transfer before launch. Squarespace says only the current site owner can transfer ownership, and attached Squarespace domains move with the site.
- When the work ends, remove the designer or lower their access. Keep a short list of who can log in, and see our notes on keeping your accounts yours.
Your next move
If you are stuck, show the unfinished path and ask for the smallest useful scope.
Is Squarespace bad for local search?
A platform alone does not settle that question; content, structure, and setup still matter.
Can I move later?
Usually, but confirm content, domain, and booking handoffs before moving.
